Pioneers win second in a row with victory over Yukon

YUKON, Okla. — The Stillwater Pioneers soccer team built on Tuesday’s win with a 2-1 victory over the Yukon Millers Friday.

“It should have been 6-1,” Stillwater coach Seth Condley said. “We pressed the ball really well and had lots of chances to score.”

Michael Dickey got the Pioneers on the board with a goal in the first 18 seconds of the game. Tr’e Diaz got the assist. Stillwater took that lead into the locker room. Yukon came back and tied the game, 12 minutes into the second half. The Pioneers scored in the last 10 minutes on a goal by Garrison Glass, which Chase Venable assisted on. Condley said he hopes his team finishes a little better on scoring chances.

“I’m a little concerned about us not finishing,” Condley said. “When we get to district we need to finish on chances or we are going to be in tight games.”

The Pioneers don’t play again until March 28 when they open the Stillwater Cup against Santa Fe South, the No. 2 team in Class 4A. The JV boys won 2-0.

“We are looking forward to it,” Condley said. “We have really good teams coming in and it’s going to be tough to get out of the first round.

YUKON — The Lady Pioneers played physically but lost 5-1 to the Lady Millers on Friday.

“The referees weren’t calling much,” coach Joey Parker said. “I thought we competed pretty well.”

Stillwater (0-3) trailed 2-0 after the first half. In the second half, the action got more physical and a little out of hand. Two Yukon players and one Stillwater player received red cards. Lauren Parker scored the Lady Pioneers only goal on a penalty kick with 30 seconds left.

Alona Williams and Monica Breivik split time as goaltenders. Parker said he’s trying to figure out which one to use for district but liked how Breivik played.

“She held her own,” Parker said. “She was shot on several times.”

The Lady Pioneers next game is on March 28 in the Stillwater Cup against Coweta at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
