Cushing baseball blows out rival Perkins-Tryon

STILLWATER, Okla. — PERKINS — Last week, the Perkins-Tryon Demons pulled out a close victory at the Cushing Tigers. Thursday at Perkins-Tryon High School, the Tigers got pay back as they scored the first six runs of the game in a 9-3 victory.

“The big difference today was that we didn’t make any errors,” Cushing coach Jon Yates said. “We played a really good game. If we can play defense like that, we will be a tough out in the postseason.”

Tanner Bane started for the Demons and looked like he was going to make it through the first unscathed, as he got a strikeout and ground out after Cushing’s first two batters singled. Kyler Patterson started a two-out rally with an RBI double over the head of P-T’s Brady Davis in center. Thad Sherwood followed with a two-RBI single to left that scored Guy Parker and Patterson.

In the top of the third, the Tigers’ first three batters reached — Keegan Myers and Drew Willson walked and Guy Parker singled on a bunt. Bane struck out the next batter but Sherwood drove in his third run of the game on a sacrifice fly to left. Trevor Brandle hit an infield single to short that scored Willson. Parker scored on a double steal with Brandle taking second. Bane got the next batter to line out to end his day after giving up six runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Sherwood started for the Tigers and was hard to solve as he didn’t allow a hit in the first three innings. P-T’s Shelby Reese got the first hit off him with a single in the bottom of the fourth. Cushing’s starter only gave up three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Yates said Sherwood pitched well.

“He had a nice game,” Yates said. “He threw strikes and let the defense make plays. He got a little tired toward the end but it was a good game.”

The Demons (14-14) rallied for two runs in the sixth on three base hits. Reese singled and Alex Dougan walked. Reed Aldridge hit an RBI single to left that scored Reese. With the bases loaded, Austin Nietenhoefer hit a sacrifice fly to left to cut Cushing’s lead to 6-3. P-T coach Kevin Miner said he liked how his players rallied.

“I felt like in the sixth inning we took over the momentum for a little bit,” Miner said. “We had a shot at it. I think that ground ball to first base sums it up. We had two outs and the ball skips over the bag. It’s just one of those things you don’t have control over.”

Cushing (16-13) responded with three runs in the top of the seventh. Two of those runs scored when the ball hit first base and went past Nietenhoefer. Willson set the Demons down in order to end the game and earn the save after pitching the last 1 2/3 innings.

The Tigers will travel to Prague and play the Red Devils at 4:30 p.m. The Demons travel to Cleveland for a 5 p.m. start.
