Stillwater athlete of the week: Williams pushes Lady Pioneers into first playoff appearance

STILLWATER, Okla. — Friday night in front of fans hurling insults, Stillwater sophomore goalie Alona Williams made the biggest save of her high school career. She blocked a shot against Ponca City in a shootout that sealed the game and the Lady Pioneers’ first playoff berth since 2003. Williams’ play between the pipes earned her the News Press Stillwater Athlete of the Week.

“I don’t remember (the shot),” Williams said. “I just remember (the Ponca City player) coming up then my team storming to me. I didn’t realize we won the game.”

Her two saves in the shootout were just a couple of the 23 saves she made in the 3-2 victory. On April 22 against Booker T. Washington, she made more than 20 saves in a 2-1 victory. Williams said she was prepared for the shootout situation Friday.

“We practice penalty kicks and I haven’t done well in practice,” Williams said. “I’m able to stop them during the game. I don’t get it, I guess it’s adrenaline.”

While Williams has come through during the Lady Pioneers’ winning streak, the season didn’t get off to the best start. For more than half the season she split time in the net with senior Monica Breivik. The sophomore had to endure some tough losses — including a 7-0 loss to Bishop McGuinness and a 10-0 loss to Union. Williams said coach Joey Parker did a good job of keeping the team’s spirits up.

“He didn’t yell at us or anything,” Williams said. “He just told us that we have to keep moving on and if we dread on it, we aren’t going to get better.”

On Tuesday night, Williams will be in goal to stop No. 5 Broken Arrow in the first round of the playoffs. She is looking forward to it.

“We played Broken Arrow’s jayvee, I don’t know if their varsity is better but I think we can take them,” Williams said.
