Perry, Cushing baseball hope to get past regionals

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Cushing Tigers and Perry Maroons will look to pull upsets as lower seeds in regionals Thursday to advance to the Class 4A and Class 3A state tournaments respectively.

Cushing (20-14) is the third seed in the Class 4A regional at Berryhill and open against No. 11 Harrah (26-8), which is coached by the Tigers’ former coach Charles Copeland at 1 p.m. Thursday. Cushing coach Jon Yates could face his former school in No. 4 Berryhill (28-9) later in the tournament.

“It’s an interesting matchup,” Yates said. “It should be a fun regional.”

The Tigers will play Berryhill or Mannford at 3 p.m. for the first game of the championship or at 5 p.m. in the consolation bracket. The tournament resumes at 4 p.m. Friday with the consolation championship and the second championship game at 6 p.m. If a third championship game is necessary it will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

“We have to play solid defense,” Yates said. “We can’t throw the ball around against anyone. If we take care of our fielding we should have a chance.”

Cushing hasn’t played Harrah. The Tigers lost to Berryhill 8-3 on the road on March 10 and lost 13-0 at home on April 1. Cushing beat Mannford on the road 17-5 on March 24 and lost 13-8 in the Oologah Invitational on March 28.

Perry (12-21) is the fourth seed in its Class 3A regional at Heritage Hall High School in Oklahoma City and opens with the host at 11 a.m. Thursday. The Maroons will play Alva (19-18) or No. 11 Jones (23-10) at 3 p.m. in the championship first game or in the consolation bracket at 5 p.m. Coach Wes Brorsen said one advantage his team has is they’ve played everyone and thinks they have a chance.

“We just have to play our best,” Brorsen said. “If we can’t make mistakes.”

The Maroons lost two of three with No. 7 Heritage Hall (26-6) — losing in extra innings on March 10 in Oklahoma City, lost 12-3 in the Piedmont Tournament and pulled out a 4-3 victory in Perry on April 15. Perry beat Alva 7-6 on March 20 in the Hector Tovar Invitational in Perry. Jones beat the Maroons 6-2 in the Bethel Tournament on April 25.
