Ripley girls advance to regional championship

WATONGA, Okla. — The Ripley Warriors’ defense carried them to the regional finals with a 42-21 victory over Sayre.

“We played well and defended well,” coach Doug Scott said. “We worked on their personnel and the took that work on the floor with them.”

Ripley (26-1) jumped out to a 16-3 lead and didn’t allow Sayre to get closer than 15. Kylie Ladd led the Lady Warriors with 11. Naomi Eslinger followed with 10. With the victory, Ripley secured a spot in next week’s area round and plays the winnner of Hennessey and Thomas Fay Custer in the regional championship at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Heritage Hall.


Yale 71, Quapaw 55

COLCORD — The Bulldogs turned up the defensive pressure in the second quarter to eliminate the Wildcats with a 71-55 victory in the Class 2A Area III Regional consolation bracket.

Yale (21-5) trailed 18-16 after the first but outscored Quapaw 18-12 in the second to take a 34-30 halftime lead. The Bulldogs increased their lead in the third, outscoring the Wildcats 17-3.

“We got off to a slow start defensively,” coach Rocky Kennedy said. “We picked it up as the game went a long.”

The Bulldogs will play the loser of Northeast and Mounds at 8 p.m. Friday in Mounds.


Yale 45, Commerce 30

COLCORD — The Yale Lady Bulldogs kept their season alive with a 45-30 victory over the Commerce Lady Tigers in the first round of the Class 2A Area III Regional consolation basketball tournament.

“We were able to pressure them and wear them down,” coach Kevin Shellhorse said.

The Lady Bulldogs (10-16) led 22-17 at halftime and increased their lead to double digits entering the fourth quarter. Lexi Huff led Yale in scoring with 20 points. Brett Thomas followed with 14.

Yale will play at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Mounds against the loser of Northeast and Hulbert.
