Stillwater High sends two wrestlers to state finals in Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY — Stillwater sophomore wrestlers Kaid Brock at 113 pounds and Joe Smith at 132 pounds put their undefeated records on the line in the 92nd Oklahoma High School State Tournament. They left Friday night with one win left to secure an undefeated season.

“Joe and Kaid are right where they expect to be,” Stillwater coach Doug Chesbro said. “They asserted their dominance on the mat and showed their opponents that they are on top.”

Brock won his first match over Norman’s Derek Ross with a fall early in the second period after scoring three takedowns and two nearfalls. In the semifinals, Brock faced Southmoore’s Conor Doling. Brock jumped out with two takedowns and kept piling it on for a 15-5 major decision victory.

“I wanted to break his spirit,” Brock said. “I wanted to get that first takedown. It’s my house, so I might as well keep them out.”

Smith won his first match by technical fall, 19-4, over Lawton’s Danny Maldanado. In the first period, Smith outscored Maldanado 11-3, with four takedowns and a near fall. Smith scored two takedowns and a nearfall in the second. An escape clinched the match in the third. Smith faced Moore’s Josh Lindsey in the semifinals. Smith fell behind in the first but came back with two takedowns before pinning Lindsey.

“I was scrambling to get a takedown,” Smith said. “I was able to come back and put points on him because he was wearing down. I just had to react to the match.”

“That’s good he had to face a little adversity,” Chesbro said. “He and everyone else is giving their all on the mat. So it was good for him to be able to come back on a big stage.”

Freshman Kennedy Monday will be looking for a medal Saturday after winning his first match 8-6 in a sudden victory. Monday lost to Dalton Duffield of Westmoore in the semifinals 1-0. Monday will face Owasso’s Hunter Youell in the consolation semifinals.

Junior King Williams got redemption for his first round loss, defeating Muskogee’s Chase Soper in a 2-1 decision. Williams will wrestle Sand Springs Cody Karstetter on Saturday.

“He showed some heart scoring that takedown late and riding him out to get a victory,” Chesbro said. “He’s in a tough weight. Anyone who makes it to the second day of the tournament has done well.”

Junior Benny Teegarden and freshman Chase Lane both went 0-2. Teegarden lost his first match by decision 3-1. Then lost to Corey Jones from Sapulpa. Lane lost by fall and by major decision 8-0.

Smith and Brock wrestle in the finals at 5:45 p.m. Smith faces Keegan Moore from Putnam City. Brock faces Owasso’s Jacob Fontanez. At the end of Smith’s match, Stillwater was in third.
