STILLWATER, Okla. —
Bishop McGuinness’ Maddie Reddick hadn’t hit a shot the entire night.
With 55 seconds left and her team trailing by one, the 5-foot-9 senior knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Lady Irish a 44-41 win over Stillwater on Friday at the Pioneer Fieldhouse, snapping the Lady Pioneers’ seven-game winning streak.
“That was just a huge shot,” Stillwater coach Carl Treat said. “We worked and worked to finally get a lead, then she hit that 3-pointer. A 3-pointer can change everything, and that was certainly a big momentum shift.”
Three-pointers were the name of the game for McGuinness in the rematch from earlier this month. The Lady Irish knocked down six 3-pointers in the first half en route to a 27-20 halftime lead.
“They’re a tough matchup because they are so oriented around the 3,” Treat said. “I thought we did a good job of disabling it in the second half. The effort was there, but we just didn’t finish.”
Stillwater (13-5) kept it close thanks to LaNesha Middleton, who scored 12 points in the second half — including 10-of-12 from the free-throw line — en route to a game high 20 points.
Stillwater High boys in a funk
The look on Stillwater High School boys’ basketball coach Michael Davis said it all.
Davis, exhausted and perplexed, couldn’t figure out why his normally strong shooting Pioneers went cold against Bishop McGuinness for the second time this season in a 48-44 Homecoming loss on Friday at the Pioneer Fieldhouse.
“I can’t figure out whether we’re in a funk or what,” Davis said. “The ball just isn’t going in the hole. You’ve seen us, normally we shoot well, but we’ve just had two bad shooting nights and they both happen to come against McGuinness.”
For three quarters, the Pioneers (13-6) kept it close, relying on Rico Thompson to lead with McGuinness keying on Tyler Holcomb. Thompson finished with 12 points.
