Pitcher Teel catching fire for Stillwater High baseball squad

STILLWATER, Okla. — Leadership, talent and a hard-working attitude has helped Carson Teel get to the point he is at now — which is a big part of the Stillwater Pioneer’s success.

Teel has helped the Pioneers reach a 12-1 record following their first 13 games this season. That also includes a perfect 4-0 record in district competition. Stillwater News Press has given Teel the Stillwater Athlete of the Week.

“He’s hitting the ball really well right now. He went out and threw a complete game against Muskogee and he has been a sparkplug for us so far this year,” Stillwater coach Jimmy Harris said. “He’s a natural winner. He’s a leader.”

Oklahoma State committ Teel’s versatility makes it diffucult for opponents to key in on his weaknesses.

“He can hit one off of the wall and he can hit one in the opposite field gap and then he’ll drop a base hit bunt down,” Harris said. “He truly plays for the team.”

Last week the Pioneers began district play. Stillwater hosted Putnam City on March 24, which was also SHS’ home opener. The Pioneers won handily 12-6. The next day, Stillwater went to Putnam City and ended the game early with a 10-0 run-rule. The Pioneers then traveled to meet rival Enid on March 27.

Stillwater would not be let down as it came out the victors with a 17-3 rout. The week kept going as SHS traveled to Muskogee for a doubleheader. The Pioneers also captured those two wins with an 8-1 and 3-2 victory.

Stillwater hopes to keep the district success going and is aiming at hosting a regional — even though powerhouses Jenks and Owasso are in the same district.

“Us and Jenks and Owasso are the toughest teams in our district so we know we have to give everybody our best shot every night,” Teel said. “I think we can do it. This team has got together and said that we’re not going to go to Owasso or Jenks and lay down to them. We’re going to give them everything we’ve got and hopefully host a regional.”

The Pioneers are under first-year head coach Harris. Stillwater has not been too concerned with the coaching with as much success that it has had already this year.

“I think what coach Harris has going is a good thing. We’ve taken what he has and have ran along with it pretty well,” Teel said.
