Pioneer soccer hopes to stay in playoff contention

STILLWATER, Okla. — When Stillwater senior goalie Jackson Murphy was a sophomore, he couldn’t make sense why seniors got emotional about Senior Night. With his final home game coming against No. 12-ranked Enid on Friday, he now understands the emotions.

“It’s sad,” Murphy said. “Looking back at my sophomore and junior year, when seniors got emotional, I thought it was funny. Now that it’s here, it’s really sad that I’m going to be leaving soon.”

The 15th-ranked Pioneers (5-4, 1-2) are coming off a 2-0 loss to Union on Tuesday. Enid (5-3, 1-1) lost 2-1 to Booker T. Washington Tuesday. The winner of Friday’s game will still be eyeing postseason.

“I feel that’s going to be the game that decides the playoffs for us,” senior Luis Rute said. “We will have to win.”

Coach Seth Condley said in previous seasons the winner has gone on to playoffs.

“Over the course of four years, whoever has won this game has made playoffs,” Condley said. “They won last year and Enid got in playoffs. We won the year before and got in playoffs. The year before that Enid won and were in. The year before that we won and got in. It’s kind of been the tale of how the games have been with us and Enid.”

Rute said the team is going to try and use the emotions of Senior Night to its advantage.

“We’re excited,” Rute said. “We are going to give 100 percent and try to win it.”

Murphy said if the Pioneers play their best game, they have a chance to end the night with a win.

“If we play hard, we can definitely beat them,” Murphy said. “It’s Senior Night, it’s going to be a big one. We need the win.”

Stillwater has 17 seniors and Condley hopes they leave the field after a victory.

The Lady Pioneers (0-9, 0-3) hope to turn a competitive loss against No. 12 Enid (7-1, 2-0) in the Stillwater Cup, into a victory on Friday. The Lady Pacers won 2-0 in the consolation semifinals last month. Coach Joey Parker thinks his team can compete.

“Enid is playing pretty good this year,” Parker said. “The good thing is we know how they are going to play.”

Stillwater has eight seniors and hopes to send them off with a win.

“I expect all my girls to go out and play strong,” Parker said. “With hard work maybe some good things will happen.”
