Warriors come out to play

RIPLEY, Okla. — Sophomore Trevor Watts pitched the game of his life. In seven innings, he struck out 11 batters to help the No. 7 Ripley Warriors clinch a berth in the Class A state tournament with a 2-0 victory over the No. 16 Morrison Wildcats.

“Trevor Watts was an animal on the hill tonight,” Ripley coach Donnie Hoffman said. “He took the baseball in his hands and he was going to win the ball game.”

The Wildcats (24-14) only got four singles — with only one of them leaving the infield. Jordan Quinata was the only player from Morrison to reach second base, when he stole in the second inning. Watts said he had good chemistry with his catcher Chandler Salinas.

“I had a good catcher back there, framing for me,” Watts said. “It made it easier on me.”

The Warriors (24-11) got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the first. Garret Gosney led off with a single and stole second. On Salinas’ fly out, Gosney advanced to third. Cory Sadler drove him in on a single.

“It was great,” Sadler said. “Got settled in and did what I do and trusted my abilities.”

Houston Twoguns, who was hit by a pitch, scored when Trevor Watts grounded out to second. Morrison coach Tim Hatter said his team played well but just came up short.

“Tonight everything was earned,” Hatter said. “Both squads played hard. Congratulations to the Ripley Warriors.”

Josh Hite started for Morrison and labored through 35 pitches in the first inning and was pulled after walking the leadoff batter. Hite allowed two runs on five hits, walked two, hit one batter and struck out two. Ty Stout pitched the final three innings.

Ripley had chances to add more but ran into outs. Dillon Moore was caught stealing second twice. Trevor Ballard was thrown out at home to end the sixth inning.

“We wanted it so bad, I thought we pressed a little at the plate,” Hoffman said. “Hats off to Morrison, they made every play.”

Watts only needed eight pitches to close the door on the Wildcats. Sadler had two assists and caught a pop up to end the game. After Ballard caught the throw, the celebration began.

“I knew the dog pile was coming,” Watts said. “We talked about it the whole week.”

The Warriors will play in the state quarterfinals on Thursday at Dolese Youth Park. The brackets will be released on Monday by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Athletic Association.

“We played great baseball,” Hoffman said. “I’m super proud of them. Couldn’t be more proud.”
