Former Pawnee star Britney Morgan catching on at UCO

STILLWATER, Okla. — Britney Morgan, a 5-foot-5-inch junior guard at the University of Central Oklahoma didn’t play against very tall girls at Pawnee. In college she found that to be a different story.

“I didn’t go against 6-foot-7 girls in high school,” Morgan said.

Morgan is in her third season as the starting point guard for the Lady Bronchos.

At Pawnee, Morgan earned an All-State selection and averaged 23.5 points per game with 4.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 3.4 steals and helped the Lady Black Bears win the 2010 2A state title. In her freshman season at UCO, Morgan averaged 9.6 points per game, 3.2 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals. She earned Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year. The then-freshman hit 57 3-pointers placing her ninth on UCO’s single-season leaders list. Her sophomore season was cut short due to injury but she averaged 9.8 points and increased her rebounds and assists. She had 10 games where she scored in double digits, including a career-high 22 points against Arkansas-Fort Smith. Morgan said she had to adjust to college level.

“The playing styles are different,” Morgan said. “The conditioning is way brutal. It’s hard to have a life outside of basketball. It’s a real time commitment. It’s almost like a job. I go to practice and then it’s straight to books. You have to prioritize. Go in and shoot and stuff.”

On Nov. 7, Morgan got to play close to her hometown as the Lady Bronchos played the Oklahoma State Cowgirls in an exhibition. The junior guard played 16 minutes and shot 2-for-3 and made 3 free throws for seven points. UCO wasn’t a match for the Cowgirls as it lost 118-43.

“It was a great experience to see how their fans are,” Morgan said. “You could tell (the Cowgirls) were good and had a lot of talent. I was grateful we got to play them.”

Morgan had several family members attend the game adding she grew up cheering for the Cowgirls.

“It was close to home,” Morgan said. “My grandpa likes to go to the games and I went with him. When Keiton (Page) was playing I went to support him.”

Page is a Pawnee graduate and graduated from Oklahoma State last season. His dad David is the boys basketball coach at Pawnee.

After nine games, Morgan is averaging 7.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.1 steals. The Lady Bronchos are 7-2. The junior said she is having fun.

“We get along so well,” Morgan said. “I’ve made a lot of new friends and we are sort of like family. We make it fun to work hard.”
