Hot shooting helps lift Frontier girls past Morrison; Collins leads Morrison boys to win

MORRISON, Okla. — In last week’s meeting with the Morrison Lady Wildcats, Frontier hit 11 3-pointers in a blowout win. Friday’s rematch was much the same as the Lady Mustangs sank 14 3-pointers in an 87-45 victory.

“We shot the ball well,” Frontier coach Clay Stephens said. “That’s pretty easy. When you are making that many 3-point shots, the game is pretty easy.”

Eleven of Frontier’s 14 3-pointers were in the first half. Morrison coach Luke Kruse said his team changed up its defense.

“We ran a 2-3 (zone) against them the first time,” Kruse said. “We should have switched to man earlier. This time we switched it up and did a 3-2, so we didn’t have to run as much. They can shoot whether you get in their face or not.”

The Lady Wildcats (6-8) jumped out to an early lead but the Lady Mustangs took control quickly with a 7-0 run. Later in the quarter, Frontier went on an 8-0 run. The Lady Mustangs’ defense again gave Morrison difficulty, forcing several turnovers. Bethany Childs’ led Frontier’s offensive attack with two 3-pointers and finished with nine points in the first quarter. Childs finished the game with 5 3-pointers and a game-high of 20 points. The Lady Mustangs led 23-11 after one.

“We played them last week in the tournament, and (Childs did the same thing),” Stephens said. “Anytime you make five 3s in a half that’s pretty good.”

Kruse said his team got off to a good start but Frontier’s shooting proved to be too much.

“They are a good team and they played more aggressively than we did,” Kruse said.

The Lady Mustangs saw starting point guard Jalissa Gum return after being out since Christmas break with an arm injury. Gum scored 7 points in the first half. Stephens said it was nice to see Gum return and hopes she improves with more playing time.

“I thought she was a little rusty,” Stephens said. “She’s still out of shape. Overall I was pleased with that.”

Frontier broke the game open in the second quarter opening with an 18-4 run. The Lady Mustangs hit 7 3-pointers and outscored the Lady Wildcats 31-14. Frontier led by at least 25 points most of the quarter, holding a 54-25 lead at halftime.

With their starters on the bench  most of the second half, the Lady Mustangs still outscored Morrison 33-20. Along with Childs’ scoring, Marissa Goodman scored 20 with 10 coming in the third quarter.

The Lady Mustangs play host to the Pawnee Lady Bears. The teams split the first two matchups. Morrison plays in the Cashion Tournament which starts Thursday.

Morrison  boys 75, Frontier 50

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and beat the Mustangs 75-50.

“We were up by 13 or 15 at halftime then got up by 20 in the third quarter,” coach Cory Bales said.

Kyle Collins scored a game-high 30 points. It was the second-time in two weeks the two teams met. Morrison pulled out a 60-58 overtime victory in the consolation finals of the Mike Kerr Classic on Jan. 12.

The Wildcats (7-7) begin play in the Cashion Tournament on Thursday.
