Childs' 3-point shooting key to Lady Mustangs' offensive success

RED ROCK, Okla. — Last season, Frontier junior guard Beth Childs got to experience something that many high school students don’t — be on a state championship basketball team.

“It was unbelievable,” Childs said. “I’ve never felt more proud of my team and getting to be a part of a championship.”

Now in her senior season, Childs has stepped up to be the Lady Mustangs’ outside scoring threat.

“She’s a good shooter for us,” coach Clay Stephens said. “I have a lot of confidence in her.”

Childs’ outside shooting gives Frontier a solid inside-outside tandem with junior post Marissa Goodman. The senior guard said it makes a difference.

“The good thing is if she is being guarded, she can pass me the ball and I usually can make it,”  Childs said. “Either me or her can score points.”

That was quite evident in the Lady Mustangs 87-45 victory over the Morrison Lady Wildcats on Friday. Childs hit five 3-pointers in the first half en route to a 20-point game. Goodman scored 20 with 10 coming in the third quarter. Childs said she works a lot on her shot.

“My dad has a fourth-grade team,” Childs said. “I shoot 3-pointers during their practices.”

Last fall, Childs was a key piece in the Lady Mustangs’ fourth consecutive berth in the state softball tournament. The senior spent most of the season at third base but moved to second when senior teammate Jalissa Gum broke her wrist. During basketball season, Gum, who starts at point guard, injured her arm. Childs moved from shooting guard to point.

“(Playing multiple positions) makes me a threat,” Childs said. “People don’t know what I’m going to do, they don’t know how to play me or guard me.”

Childs said if she gets the opportunity she would like to continue her playing career in college.
