Father-son bond leads to success for Cushing's Tanner

CUSHING, Okla. — Cushing’s Nick Tanner grew up around golf. His father Bob is the high school golf coach. It was only natural for Tanner to get involved in the sport.

“My dad’s been a coach since I was four, so I was always around it,” Tanner said. “I started playing ever since I was little.”

Now, Tanner is one of the leaders on the Tigers’ golf team. Last week he had strong performances — finishing as the second best individual in the Cushing tournament on April 15 and winning the Tulsa 7 on April 16.

“I did pretty good,” Tanner said. “It was really cold which is never fun. I had to fight through it. I practice a lot and I’m feeling ready for regionals.”

Tanner shot a 72 in the Cushing Tournament and helped the Tigers to a third place finish. Coach Tanner said his son is having a good year.

“He’s averaging a 73,” the coach said. “He’s won three tournaments.”

Tanner also plays for his dad in basketball. The Cushing senior said it’s an interesting dynamic but one that he enjoys.

“There’s a lot more pressure to perform,” Tanner said. “A lot is expected from me and I try to perform my best.”

Tanner said the transition from basketball to golf is a big change.

“You go from a really phyiscal sport to a more mental game,” Tanner said. “It’s a big difference.”

The Cushing senior admitted it took some time to get his stroke down.

“I started rough,” Tanner said. “I just got tired of shooting high and praticed hard to be shooting around par.”

Like most young golfers, Tanner likes Tiger Woods.

“I like that with all that he’s been through and the way he is coming back.”
