Glencoe, Class A still in waiting for state tournament

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Glencoe Panthers were supposed to take the diamond and battle the Roff Tigers Thursday in the Class A state baseball quarterfinals at Dolese Park. Rain throughout the day forced the Panthers to the batting cages and to wait one more day for their biggest game of the season.

“We were really excited about playing today,” sophomore Hunter Hall said. “It was really a drag to not play. School went by slower.”

Glencoe is scheduled to play at 4 p.m. Friday but weather isn’t the only thing that could delay the 2013 state tournament from starting. Wright City, which had to forfeit the quarterfinals because of playing too many regular season games, successfully secured a court injunction on Wednesday from a McCurtain County judge, temporarily postponing the tournament in hopes of getting reinstated. A hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday between Wright City and the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Athletic Association. If there is a resolution, the tournament will resume. Junior Jake Lazenby said that’s the toughest thing right now.

“I don’t understand what the big deal is,” Lazenby said. “They played too many regular season games.”

Wright City was supposed to play Sterling in the first round, with the winner playing the Glencoe-Roff winner in the semifinals. Sophomore Ty Lazenby said though it’s tough not getting to play, it hasn’t affected the team.

“We were ready to play (Thursday),” Lazenby said. “When we do get to play, we will be ready to go.”

Jake said the team is taking advantage of the extra time, adding the rain didn’t keep them from practice.

“We have a hitting facility and threw some bullpen sessions,” Jake said. “It was nice on Monday and Tuesday, so we got a couple of good practices in.”

Glencoe isn’t afraid to express its confidence as it knows a thing or two about winning after winning the Class A state basketball championship in March.

“Winning just carries over,” Jake said. “We think we have a good chance of winning.”

“We think we have a good chance of winning in baseball too,” Ty said. “We beat Union City and that was probably our best win. If we can beat them, we can beat anybody.”

If Glencoe wins Friday, it will play Sterling at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, assuming Wright City’s forfeit stands.

Cushing, Perkins-Tryon and Yale had their regionals postponed until Friday. Cushing will face Bethel at 2 p.m. in Piedmont. Perkins-Tryon will face Pawhuska at 2 p.m. in Verdigris. Yale plays at Dale at 11 a.m.
