STILLWATER, Okla. — Last season, the Perry Maroons saw their reign of dominance in Class 3A wrestling come to an end with a second place finish in the state tournament. This season, the Maroons look for redemption as they start competition in the 92nd Oklahoma Wrestling State Tournament at the Oklahoma State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City.

“We got the guys in play,” coach Ronnie Delk said. “We practiced on Sunday and Monday. We are focused on one round at a time.”

The Maroons are coming off a regional victory in Kingfisher last weekend. Seniors Tevin Williams (113) and Kyle Varley (220) junior Colton Looper (145) and sophomores Dalton Revels (106) and Noah Nida (120) won their weight classes. Senior Austin Allen (152), junior Bo Montez (195) and sophomore Garrett Beier (182) were runners-up. Senior Nate Wade (285) and juniors David Thomas (160) and Cole Ingram (170) won the consolation finals. Sophomore Zane Johnson qualified with a fourth-place finish in the 126-pound weight class. Delk said several of his wrestlers have a good chance.

“Tevin Williams’ road to state won’t be easy,” Delk said. “Noah Nida should have made the finals last year. Colton Looper is looking to get back to the finals. I can say something about each one of my wrestlers.”

The Cushing Tigers are looking to compete for the Class 4A state championship after qualifying most of their team. Sophomore Blake Burden won the 106-pound weight class. Junior Daniel Hood finished second in the 113-pound weight class. Junior Mason Roberts won the 126-pound weight class. Senior Ricky Ahrberg finished second in the 138-pound weight class. Senior Ryan Moline was a regional runner-up in the 145-pound weight class. Sophomore Jacob Miller finished fourth in the 152-pound weight class. Junior Gage Stallworth’s only loss of the season came in the 160-pound weight class finals. Junior Daniel Rowell finished second in the 170-pound weight class. Junior Trevor Hubble finished fourth in the 195-pound weight class.

Calls to coach Chad Short were not returned.

The Perkins-Tryon Demons qualified three for the Class 3A state tournament. Junior Blake Avery finished third in the 126-pound weight class to qualify for the third straight season. Senior Brett Cheary finished third in the 132-pound weight class. Senior Brandon Moody finished fourth in the 152-pound weight class. Coach Ken Matheson said all three wrestlers worked hard and competed at a high level.

“I want them to first enjoy making it to state,” Matheson said. “Take in the whole scene. I want them to go out and wrestle their best.”

The Pawnee Black Bears qualified one as junior Marlon Houston Jr. won the 170-pound weight class at regionals.

The quarterfinals will start at  10:30 a.m. Friday. The first round of consolations will follow at 5 p.m. The semifinals will conclude Friday at 7:15 p.m. Saturday will open with the consolation semifinals at 10:30 a.m. followed by the consolation finals at 12:45 p.m. The finals will be at 5:45 p.m.
