All-Area Spring Sports Boys MVP: Murphy clutch between the posts

STILLWATER, Okla. — Much like the quarterback position in football, the goalie position is one of the most scrutinized in soccer because it usually plays a big part in the outcome. More times than not, senior Jackson Murphy came through in the pressure situations and helped the Stillwater Pioneers reach the soccer playoffs. The Stillwater News Press named him All-Area Spring Sports Boys MVP.

Murphy made several big saves but isn’t going to take all the credit because he knows he had some help.

“It was a great team effort,” Murphy said. “All of us did our part to help us get back (to playoffs). We were a really good defensive team.”

Of the Pioneers’ seven victories, three were by one goal and one was by two goals. Murphy said he and his teammates had to stay mentally tough.

“We had to play for each other and stay strong all the way around,” Murphy said. “I was doing it for my teammates.”

The highlight of the season for the senior goalie was all the way back in the second game of the season which ended in a 1-0 shootout victory for Stillwater against Bishop McGunness.

“I had to stop the last two goals in a super windy night,” Murphy said.

One of the biggest games for the senior goalie was the Pioneers’ 3-1 victory over Enid, which put them in good shape to clinch a playoff spot.

“It was a really big game,” Murphy said. “We were using the emotions of senior night to pull us through.”

Stillwater faced Broken Arrow in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs and allowed two goals late in a 2-0 loss. Murphy said it was a fun experience.

“It was crazy intense,” he said. “Everyone was so hyped up.”
