Exciting things ahead for the 2014 Pioneer Playday

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater Pioneers Booster Club hopes to raise a lot of money and have fun doing it with the 24th annual Pioneer Playday Friday at the Stillwater Country Club.

The event kicks off with a fun run at 7 a.m. The course is the front nine holes at the country club — which is less than two miles. Participants will receive a T-shirt and a free breakfast. Registration for the event is at 6:45 a.m. and is $20 for students and $30 for adults.

One of the biggest events of the day is the golf tournament, which will be played in a 4-man scramble format at 8 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. with lunch included. Last year’s event came down to a chip-off for the first time in the history of the event.

“We have 19 teams in the morning and 20 in the afternoon,” said Carolyn Walstad, event organizer. “We’re full on golf.”

After making it’s debut last year, the Pioneer Style fashion show is returning to this year’s agenda with a 4 p.m. start. The show is $20 and includes light appetizers and a glass of wine for those of drinking age.

“We will be highlighting Wooden Nickel, Chris Spirit Shop, Dupree’s and the University Store in the Oklahoma State Student Union,” Walstad said. “The cheer and pom squad will be trying on several different outfits.”

A silent auction will be held at the country club. Items range from local gift certificates to autographed items and travel opportunities. Several Stillwater High coaches and athletes will be at the tournament. Walstad said there is something for everybody.

“We have autograph items from Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson,” Walstad said. “You can shadow the OSU football team for a day — practice with them, eat lunch in the training room and go to their meeting. We have a cabin at Broken Bow which is a phenomenal area for trout fishing.”

After Stillwater won three state championships last year, Walstad said there’s excitement for the 2014-15 season.

“Our sponsorships are up and our teams are looking solid,” Walstad said. “We look to replace some kids and repeat the results from last season.”
