Gorham's post presence key to Perkins-Tryon's run to state

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Perkins-Tryon Lady Demons were one of the most dominating basketball teams in Class 3A, winning 28 of 29 games to reach the state championship. The key to P-T’s success was the post play of senior Jordan Gorham.

“I’ve been a leader on the team since my sophomore season,” Gorham said. “It felt different as senior. It was more like a job and I knew what I had to do.”

In 29 games, Gorham averaged 16.2 points and 10.5 rebounds. The senior post didn’t see leadership as pressure as she had help from senior teammate McKenzie Stanford.

“McKenzie wasn’t eligible last year,” Gorham said. “This year with her playing, I wasn’t depended on all the time to provide scoring. It took the scoring pressure off of me.”

Gorham also had a strong presence on the defensive end, leading the team in rebounds and blocked shots.

“My main focus this year was on defense — blocking out and rebounding,” Gorham said. “Blocks were just sprinkled in between.”

Gorham said coach Jerry Burnett helped her become a better player but her mom had a big influence on her basketball career.

“She never quit pushing me,” Gorham said. “She worked with me on different things and helped make me a better basketball player.”

Last season, Gorham led the Lady Demons to the state championship game for the first time since 1997. The senior said it was a special season.

“My freshman year we were expected to win it all and didn’t make it past area,” Gorham said. “Sophomore and junior year we made the semifinals. This year beating the defending state champion (Millwood) was incredible. It would have been awesome to win the championship. A couple days after the game and looking back we accomplished a lot. We were the first team at Perkins-Tryon to go undefeated to the state finals.”

Gorham isn’t finished with basketball yet as she received a full-ride scholarship to Oklahoma Christian. The Perkins-Tryon senior said she hopes to make an impact.

“I hope I can make a name for myself there,” Gorham said. “Being able to go on a full-ride scholarship is incredible. I wanted to play basketball in college and if I had to walk-on I would have. It’s a true blessing.”
