Tigers rout Pioneers with big second inning

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. —  Last week, the Stillwater Pioneers’ baseball team tamed the Broken Arrow Tigers’ bats at home. Saturday, the Tigers struck back with 12 runs on 10 hits in a 12-1 victory over the visiting Pioneers.

Stillwater took an early lead when Carson Teel scored on a dropped third strike, which allowed Jon Littell to reach base.

In the second inning, the Tigers broke the game open and chased Pioneers’ starting pitcher Sam Kraybill out of the game. Most of Broken Arrow’s damage was done with a two-run triple by Anthony Alvarez and a three-run home run by Cody Ziegler. Broken Arrow led 8-1 after the second.

“We made a few mistakes,” Stillwater coach Tony Holt said. “Cobb was good and we got some good at-bats early. Everything fell apart in one inning. We just didn’t do many things well.”

The Tigers added two runs in the third and fourth to seal the game. Trey Cobb, who recently signed with Oklahoma State earned the win. He scattered three singles and struck out six. Kraybill took the loss for Stillwater, allowing eight runs in 1 1/3 innings.

The Pioneers return to action 2 p.m. Monday at Bishop Kelley. The teams were orginally supposed to play Saturday but were rained out. Stillwater visits Bartlesville at 4 p.m. Tuesday. If Stillwater wins one of those games they will be guaranteed to host regionals. If they lose both, the Pioneers will visit Owasso at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
