Enid girls pull away from Stillwater in second half

STILLWATER, Okla. — A strong second-half start by the Enid girls basketball team was the difference in Tuesday’s contest between rivals Stillwater and Enid at the Pioneer Field house.

The Lady Pioneers failed to score a field goal in the third quarter and let the Pacers push ahead after holding a three-point lead and Enid rolled on to a 51-37 victory.

“There in the third quarter, we had some defensive breakdowns and had too many turnovers,” SHS coach Carl Treat said. “Offensively, we were very ineffective with no field goals. We had command of the game at halftime, but it was just ineffective offense and poor transition defense to start the second half.”

Enid go its first double-digit lead when Raleigh Hammer hit a 3-pointer to make it 33-23 with a little over three minutes left the third quarter. Enid ended up outscoring Stillwater 19-4 in the quarter, with the Lady Pioneers — who led 21-18 at halftime — scoring all four of their points from the free throw line.

The Pacers went on a 14-3 run in the first six minutes of the second half that was spurred by Stillwater’s turnover issues — turning the ball over eight times in that span, after turning the ball over just four times in the opening half. The Lady Pioneers finished with 15 turnovers for the game.

Stillwater didn’t score its first field goal of the second half until the 6:45 mark in the fourth quarter on a put-back bucket by LaNesha Middleton, who finished with a game-high 25 points for Stillwater.

Middleton was the lone Stillwater player to top the 10-point plateau as only three other Lady Pioneers scored for Stillwater — which 26 percent from the field for the game.
