Stillwater swimming team hosts quadrangular Thursday

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater swimming teams will be setting their sights on finishing the first half of the season on a strong note.

Stillwater will host Broken Arrow, Owasso and Guymon at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Stillwater Y. The incoming visitors will make for a tough test for the girls and boys squads.

“90 percent of the teams that we swim against are (Class) 6A teams because that’s where the good competition is at,” Stillwater coach Kurt Goebel.

The Owasso girls will come into Stillwater ranked as the No. 8 team in Class 6A, Broken Arrow is the No. 11 team in Class 6A. The Lady Pioneers enter as the No. 5 team in Class 5A.

Broken Arrow’s boys team will storm Stillwater sporting the No. 8 spot in Class 6A while Owasso holds No. 11. Guymon will make the trip as Class 5A’s No. 12. The Pioneers are the No. 3 ranked team in Class 5A.

The Stillwater teams have seen their share of success this year but they will not slow down as they look to push themselves further.

“I see some gelling. Some of the kids are starting to push each other,” Goebel said.

The Lady Pioneers will need to give it their all if they hope to come out on top on Thursday night.

“It will be good for our girls to have that type of competition in the pool,” Goebel said.

For the Pioneers their competition will be three ranked teams. Stillwater will look to swim strong in front of its home crowd.

“I think for our mid-level boys there will be some good races for some of our faster kids I’m not sure that any of the teams will have anything,” Goebel said.

Stillwater will have the upper-hand on the three visiting teams. SHS knows the pool and how best to swim it.

“We have a really good chance of winning our meet and we’re really excited for it,” Stillwater senior Alex Thomas said. “We know the turns better in this pool and we’re used to it.”

The excitement level will also be on Stillwater’s side. Stillwater will likely have more of a crowd presence which will bring a lot of energy to the pool.

“We’re pretty excited. We want to see what we can do against Broken Arrow and see if we can drop time,” Stillwater senior Matthew Tree said. “Home meets are really good and we have the pool advantage.”

SHS will not get back in the pool until Jan. 1, after their home meet. It is import to finish the first half of the season on strong note.

“We’ve got a big workout the next week ahead of them,” Goebel said.

Stillwater will look to not only win meets in their schedule this year but they also are looking toward the Class 5A state title.

“I think the boys and the girls both have a shot at winning the 5A state title, team-wise,” Goebel said.

Stillwater will host Broken Arrow, Guymon and Owasso in its home swim meet at the Stillwater Y.
