SHS splits two at Sand Springs

Pioneers win, Lady Pioneers suffer narrow loss

SAND SPRINGS — Down two players to injury and playing on the road for the 14th time in 16 games this season, it would have been easy for the Stillwater High School boys basketball team to look past Sand Springs and ahead to a bunch of games at home to end the regular season.

Instead, the Pioneers went with a big lineup and overcame a sluggish start to beat the Sandites 62-48 on Tuesday in Sand Springs.

On the girls side, the Lady Pioneers made a valiant comeback attempt against No. 12 Sand Springs before falling 46-41.

With Connor Lamb (sprained foot) and Joe Pierre (bruised knee) out of Tuesday’s game, the Pioneers (5-10) went with a 7-player rotation to beat the Sandites (4-12).

Alex Budke came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with 15 points and Jevon Bennett responded with one of his best games of the season with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Jordan Pound added 13 points and 7 assists while Josh Pierre hit two 3-pointers to score 8 points.

“The guys played hard (Tuesday),” SHS coach Michael Davis said. “We went with a big lineup and it was different and we had a lot of size that worked for us. We had great rebounding and we played really good defense.”

SHS outrebounded Sand Springs 27-18 and turned the ball over just 11 times.

“Alex Budke came off the bench and played great, he played like he’s capable of playing,” Davis said. “And the old Jordan Pound showed up (Tuesday). We had basically seven guys play (Tuesday) and they did a good job.”

Stillwater returns home Friday night to host Class 4A No. 3 Bishop McGuinness at 8 p.m. at the Pioneer Field House.

Down by 14 heading into the fourth quarter against the 12th-ranked team on its home floor wasn’t a good place for the Lady Pioneers (5-11) to be. But they almost pulled it off.

Stillwater outscored Sand Springs (11-5) 18-9 in the final quarter, and had the ball with a chance to cut the lead to two.

“We played really well for stretches,” SHS coach Carl Treat said. “We shared the ball on offense (12 assists off 15 made baskets) and we’re understanding our offense better. They (Sand Springs) just had two big runs that we couldn’t overcome.”

Austyn Iven came off the bench to score a season-high 11 points to lead the Lady Pioneers. Emma Gade added 10 points while Haylee Frazier hit two 3-pointers to score 6 and LaNesha Middleton 5 to go with 12 rebounds.

SHS returns home this Friday to host Class 4A No. 7 Bishop McGuinness at 6:30 p.m.
