District title within reach for Cushing

CUSHING, Okla. — Last season, the Cushing Tigers were a yard and a half short on a 2-point conversion that would have given them a district title.

All through offseason and fall workouts, the Tigers focus was to get that yard and a half. Friday night against the Seminole Chieftains, Cushing hopes to gain that yard and a half to claim the District 2-3A championship at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Cushing.

“We appreciate getting to play in front of our community,” coach Barrett Shupe said. “They have provided us with great support this season.”

The Chieftains (7-0, 4-0) enter Friday’s game with four straight lopsided victories ranging from 24 points to 40 points. Seminole has scored 40 or more points in six of their last seven. Perkins-Tryon was the only team to hold them under that total, only giving up 14 in a Sept. 21 loss. Seminole doesn’t just have one quarterback that will see snaps, as Doc Harvey, Jayce Cravens and Trey Ervin could see action.

Papi White and Trenton Newson have been leaders in the Chieftain rushing attack. White is also capable of catching passes and making plays in the open field.

“I’m confident that Coach (Dusty) Hancock will have a great gameplan for us,” Shupe said. “We got to get off blocks and make tackles. If we don’t any of their players are capable of taking it to the house.”

Cushing’s road to an undefeated district record has been far from easy. Three of their four victories they had to come from behind in the second half. On Sept. 28 against Bristow, the Tigers trailed 56-35 with seven minutes left in the game, before rallying to a 64-63 overtime victory. In an Oct. 12 game against Chandler, Cushing trailed 14-0 after one and 14-7 at halftime, before exploding for 20 points in the third quarter to win 27-21. Last week at Perkins-Tryon, the Tigers entered the fourth quarter trailing 27-21 but got three touchdowns from Gage Stallworth to win 42-27.

“We have to get off to a good start,” Shupe said. “This is a game where we have to play all four quarters. If we don’t we will probably get beat.”

Stallworth said they need to start games how they finish games.

“It seems like we start sluggish but pick it up in the second half,” Stallworth said.

“We scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter last week and only scored twice in the first half. If we can play all four quarters like we did in the fourth, we will be tough to beat.”
