Legionnaires fall to Lawton, Ardmore

LAWTON, Okla. — The luck wasn’t on the side of the Stillwater Legionnaires Satuday in Lawton. Before the first pitch was thrown, Stillwater lost its starting shortstop Brady Baugh and were without coach Scott Baugh. The Legionnaires came home with two losses — 9-5 to Lawton and 8-7 to Ardmore.

Coach Baugh took his son to the doctor and found out that he had mononucleosis. Brady Baugh is the team’s leadoff hitter and one of the team leaders in stolen bases. Assistant coach Jacob Vogt said he will miss time.

“He’ll probably be out a week or two,” Vogt said.

Jared Bartmann of Perry, started against Lawton and took the loss. Vogt said Lawton just hit the ball well.

“They started in the second inning,” Vogt said. “They hit our pitcher and hit the ball in the gaps. They were getting on base and scoring. There wasn’t much we could do.”

Hayden Bagwell of Oilton relieved Bartmann and held Lawton’s bats in check. Vogt said his team played much better in the second game.

“We started slow but got going,” Vogt said. “One of (Ardmore’s) kids hit a home run but they got us with slow rollers for base hits. It was a fun game. It was a hitter’s game.”

Edward Layton of Pioneer started and took the loss after he pitched a complete game shutout in his previous outing last Saturday. Vogt said Nathan Melton of Glencoe and Weston Ward of Perry led the offense.

“Both players hit the ball well,” Vogt said.

The losses extended the Legionnaires’ losing streak to three after they won their four previous games before losing to Edmond Memorial on Thursday.

Stillwater returns home Monday to face Oklahoma City Brassfield 6:30 p.m. Monday at Couch Park. Vogt said returning home will be nice.

“It will be good to be back in the area and have our home crowd,” Vogt said. “We should be able to get back on track and start winning again.”
