Perkins-Tryon's Adkism's defense key to run to state

STILLWATER, Okla. — Perkins-Tryon’s junior guard Jeri Adkism has one job on the floor — stop the other team’s top scorer. Coach Jerry Burnett said that’s a job she excels in.

“She has colleges looking at her, just for defense,” Burnett said.

Adkism said she enjoys that role adding it helps having the support of her teammates.

“I can stop anybody (Burnett) puts me on,” Adkism said. “(My team) knows what I’m capable of.”

The junior guard said having colleges interested in her makes her understand the importance of her role.

“I’m not a scorer,” Adkism said. “I’m looking to win. When I’m on you, I’m going to come at you with all I have.

Though the Lady Demons didn’t rely on Adkism’s scoring, they did appreciate her contributions as it took the defense’s attention away from senior post players Jordan Gorham and McKenzie Stanford.

“She’s been hobbled with a knee injury,” Burnett said. “She can light it up.”

In the state quarterfinals on March 7, the junior guard hit a key 3-pointer that helped P-T pull away from Hugo. The next day in the semifinals, Adkism hit two 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Adkism said she liked playing with Gorham and Stanford and tried to help them out with her scoring.

“All year we hear that we don’t have good guard play,” Adkism said. “When our guards are on and the post play is on, we are tough to beat. I can hit from the outside and penetrate to the hole.”

For the third time in her career, Adkism got to play in State Fair Arena for the state tournament, helping the Lady Demons finish as runners-up. The junior guard said this trip was less nerve-wracking.

“I remember my freshman year I was nervous, looking at all the people,” Adkism said. “It takes hard work to beat the best teams in the state. It’s good to know that Bailey and I have been there before.”

Next season, Adkism will be one of the senior veterans and she is looking forward to leading the team back next season.

“I’m ready to take that leadership role,” Adkism said. “It’s another shot for me to give it my all.”
