Stillwater High softball can’t slow Owasso onslaught

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater Lady Pioneers softball team has had trouble falling behind early and Thursday was no different as the Owasso Lady Rams routed the Lady Pioneers 11-2 at Little Couch Park.

Lead-off walks proved costly early for Stillwater. In the first inning, Owasso’s Katy Taylor walked and stole second. Two ground outs brought Taylor home. With two outs, Owasso got three straight hits, including a two-run single by Kenzie Stevens to increase the Lady Rams lead to 3-0.

In the second inning, Devin Hale led off Owasso’s inning with a walk. Stillwater third baseman Laikyn Anderson overthrew first baseman Sydney Scott, allowing the ball to roll into right field. Hale scored and Taylor reached third. Owasso struck again with two outs, this time with Brooke Curtis hitting the ball over the left field fence to give the Lady Rams a 6-0 lead.

After that hit, the Lady Pioneers’ defense buckled down, holding Owasso scoreless in three of the next four innings. The Lady Rams only got two hits during that span and their only run was set up by an error by Anderson.

“We buckled down about the fourth or fifth inning,” coach Amber Davis said. “We gave up some runs early but we hung in there.”

Stillwater pitcher Taylor Lane said she was glad her teammates were able to play well behind her.

“In the start of the game they were a little off,” Lane said. “Halfway through the game they definitely picked it up and helped me and had my back.”

The Lady Pioneers finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to miscues by Owasso. The fourth inning seemed like it was going to be easy for Owasso as it retired the first two batters. Stillwater catcher Halley Randolph reached on a grounder that Lady Rams first baseman Emily Beven couldn’t field cleanly. Christy Leim followed with a single. Anderson reached when second baseman Skyler Compton’s threw the ball past the first baseman, allowing Randolph to score. Davis said her team hit the ball hard.

“We scored some runs and kind of ran out of time,” Davis said.

The Lady Pioneers (5-10, 3-7) will make up their game at Ponca City on Friday and will visit Enid at 6 p.m. Monday. Stillwater closes out the district schedule with Midwest City at home at 5 p.m. Tuesday and visit Westmoore at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Davis said it will be a big week for her team.

“We got to put our big girl pants on and try to get through next week,” Davis said.

Lane said hopefully the team can start turning things around.

“I think we can definitely do better,” Lane said. “I’m glad we have more chances to fix things.”
