No. 6 Cushing hopes to knock off No. 3 Seminole for a district title

STILLWATER, Okla. — The stakes couldn’t be any higher for the No. 6 Cushing Tigers (8-0, 4-0) as they will fight to not only keep their undefeated record but clinch District 2-3A against the No. 3 Seminole Chieftains (8-0, 4-0).

“We’re excited,” Cushing coach Barrett Shupe said. “The program, kids and community are looking forward to it.”

The Tigers and Chieftains met for the district championship last season in Cushing with Seminole running away with the crown in a 48-19 rout. Shupe said his defense knows what it’s going up against.

“They are a very good explosive football team,” Shupe said. “We are going to have our work cut out for us.”

Last season, Seminole used its kicking game to keep the ball out of Cushing’s hands by converting onside kicks. Shupe said his team will be ready for it on Friday.

“We spent all week preparing for it,” Shupe said. “We just have to keep executing well.”

In last season’s contest, Seminole was able to keep Cushing’s running back Gage Stallworth in check, only allowing three rushes of 10 yards or more. Shupe said his team learned from last season and won’t change their offense.

“We are going to do what we do,” Shupe said. “Last season we changed some things up and didn’t work out well for us.”

The Perkins-Tryon Demons (4-4, 2-3) are just looking to get into the playoffs period as they host the Chandler Lions (4-4, 1-3) at 7:30 p.m. at McIlvain Field.

“All the marbles are on the table,” P-T coach Lloyd Wertman said. “Everyone knows what they have to do. We have to go out and perform. We can’t have any turnovers and penalties, we have to execute on offense and defense.”

This game is crucial for P-T because it will be the team’s last chance to improve its district record. A loss would mean the Demons would have to hope for a three-way tie with Chandler and Bristow to get the last playoff spot. Wertman said his team is preparing for tricks that the Lions use in the kicking game.

The Yale Bulldogs (4-4, 2-3) are also looking for a win, to secure their third-straight playoff berth when they visit the Hominy Bucks (3-5, 2-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. It’s a must win for the Bulldogs, who close the season with a non-district game. Two of three of Yale’s district losses were on the road.

The Morrison Wildcats (7-1, 5-0) hope to rest some of their starters as they host the Foyil Panthers (1-7, 0-5) in a non-district contest. The Wildcats will play for the Class A District 7 championship next week against Kiefer.

The only thing on the line for the Perry Maroons (2-6, 0-4) and the Pawnee Black Bears (2-6, 0-5) is pride. Both teams were eliminated from playoff contention last week. This is Pawnee’s last chance to earn a district win — something it hasn’t done since 2011. Perry is looking for its first winning streak since it went on a four-game winning streak at the end of last season.
