Stillwater Athlete of the Week: Carpenter succeeds by playing smart

STILLWATER, Okla. — There are good days and bad days in golf. On April 29 at Kickingbird Golf Course in Edmond, Stillwater senior Sarah Carpenter turned a rough start into a sixth-place finish and helped the Lady Pioneers advance to the state tournament. Her performance earned her News Press Stillwater Athlete of the Week.

“It was a windy day and I just needed to be smart,” Carpenter said. “I had to keep the ball low so it stayed on the fairway. My score shows the strategy paid off.”

Carpenter shot an 83 but her day didn’t get off to a good start. On the first two holes she was 4 over. The senior said she just had to recover.

“I was really discouraged but knew I had to come back,” Carpenter said. “I played OK on the rest of the holes.”

Coach John Weaver said Carpenter is a consistent and intelligent player.

“The thing that makes Sarah good at what she does is that she doesn’t make the big mistake,” Weaver said. “She doesn’t try to force the issue and knows where to pick her spots. It makes it a lot easier to get a low score.”

Carpenter knows her teammates rely on her to have a good outing.

“I just had to tell myself that I have 16 holes ahead of me,” Carpenter said. “I just had to make sure I did well on the other holes.”

For the second time in her career, Carpenter will be playing on the state tournament golf course. That’s something she is looking forward to.

“I feel that I’m playing my best golf right now,” Carpenter said. “Hopefully, I can keep it up and have another good tournament.”

The Lady Pioneers compete at state Wednesday and Thursday in Ponca City.

Brooks Zimmerman, baseball

Zimmerman hit a two-RBI single in the top of the seventh to help lead Stillwater to a 4-2 victory over Jenks to earn SHS a district championship on April 29.

Beem and Thompson went 3-0 during Stillwater’s triangular Thursday against Moore, Ponca City and Guthrie.

Brandon Prather, track

Prather dominated the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, five inches during the Pioneer Invite Thursday.
