STILLWATER, Okla. —
It isn’t hard to spot Tyler Holcomb, whether it’s on the basketball court or roaming the halls of Stillwater High School.
If his red hair and tall, lengthy frame don’t give him away, his joking nature makes him the center of attention most of the time.
“He’s a real jokester,” Stillwater coach Michael Davis said. “He kind of takes the pressure off the other guys sometimes. The whole team is real close, but he just makes them that much closer.”
While he may be a clown off the court, Holcomb was not messing around in a pair of wins last week. Against Tulsa NOAH, Holcomb scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds. He topped that one night later, scoring 27 points — including knocking down 3 of 4 3-pointers — in the Pioneers’ 107-50 win over Harding Prep on Friday.
“Tyler shot the ball really well in both those games,” Davis said. “He’s a confident player and we want him to consistently shoot between 35 and 45 percent from 3-point range.
“A lot of that is because of the time he’s put in the gym ... Tyler has become more and more of a gym rat,” Davis said. “When I come in on Sundays, he and Caleb Watkins are already working on their shots in the gym.”
Davis said Holcomb and Watkins usually set up chairs to refine their shooting technique — something Davis uses in practice.
“It helps them go straight up and not forward,” Davis said. “It also forces Tyler to go straight up and elevate his shot. When his shot isn’t flat, you might as well count it.”
