Area Athlete of the Week: Stallworth caps prep wrestling career with third straight title

STILLWATER, Okla. — Cushing senior Gage Stallworth finished his high school athletic career the best way possible — on top. Stallworth defeated Tuttle’s Seth Shelton in the 160-pound weight class to claim his third state wrestling title Saturday at Jim Norick State Fair Arena. His victory earned him News Press Area Athlete of the Week.

“It was good to end on top,” Stallworth said. “I’ve been stressed thinking about where I’m going to go to college. It was nice to go out there and relax.”

Stallworth finished his senior season 22-0, which was the first time he finished undefeated. He took the lead early in the match with a takedown and didn’t look back in a 5-2 decision. Earlier on Saturday, Stallworth’s two teammates Daniel Hood and Mason Roberts were defeated by Tuttle wrestlers. For Stallworth, it didn’t matter what color singlet his opponent was wearing just that he beat them.

“It’s nice beating Tuttle,” Stallworth said. “It didn’t matter who was on the other side of the mat. I just wanted to wrestle my best.”

The senior wasn’t only a star on the wrestling mat but on the turf. In his final season, he rushed for more than 2,000 yards and 40 touchdowns. Stallworth said it’s amazing being talented in two sports but doesn’t take all the credit.

“In wrestling and football, I wouldn’t have had the success I did without my coaches,” Stallworth said. “My teammates and parents have always been there for me. I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere without them.”

Stallworth is trying to decide on his future — not only what college to go to but what sport to play.

“I’ve talked to quite a few schools for both sports,” Stallworth said. “I’ve had past teammates that I played football with talk to their coaches about me. I’m having fun with it.”
