Twice is nice: Glencoe repeats as state champions with perfect season

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Glencoe Panthers stood alone on the court at Jim Norick State Fair Arena. A 14-0 run in the fourth quarter left Glencoe as the only undefeated team in Class A at 29-0 with a 57-39 victory over the Kiowa Cowboys in the Class A state championship.

“Even though the lead wasn’t much, we maintained it. We got on a run and built it,” coach John Lazenby said. “I thought once we got up by double digits we were in good shape.”

The game was back and forth with the Panthers holding a 25-21 halftime lead. Glencoe pulled out to a 30-21 lead in the second half but Kiowa cut it to two.

That’s when Ty Lazenby took the game into his own hands, as he scored the Panthers’ next 15 points. Glencoe pulled out to a 45-32 lead in the fourth quarter.

“Whenever the game is on the line, I have the ability to take over games,” Ty Lazenby said. “My teammates open things up for me that I wouldn’t get by myself. J.K. (Hadlock) hit a 3 at the beginning of the half and it just opens things up.”

Coach Lazenby said both of his sons played well.

“Ty stepped up,” coach Lazenby said. “Jake, he just won’t miss a free throw. That’s the way he is.”

In the first half, Glencoe only made eight of 24 field goal attempts. Jake Lazenby said Kiowa had a really good defensive game plan.

“We were trying to go too fast,” Lazenby said. “The second half we kind of slowed it down and did better.”

Senior Sean Smith said they were able to turn the game on the defensive end.

“We just worked hard and played defense,” Smith said. “We got some stops and Ty Lazenby stepped up and scored a few buckets for us.”

Kiowa (27-5) didn’t score its first points in the fourth quarter until 4:12 left in the game. With a minute left in the game, coach Lazenby brought in his reserves and started celebrating with his son Jake as the two embraced.

“My dad said the best way you can go out is by winning,” Jake Lazenby said. “That’s what we ended up doing. That’s the only way I would want to go out.”

Ty Lazenby finished with a game-high 37 points and shot 13 of 25 from the field. Lazenby said it was awesome to finish 29-0.

“Not very many teams do that,” Lazenby said. “That’s hard to do. We did it. We couldn’t do it without everybody.”

The Panthers have won 33 consecutive games since losing in the area championship last season and repeated state championships for the first time in school history. Glencoe will lose Jake Lazenby, Smith and Quentin Ash but Ty Lazenby said they should have a good chance of coming back next year.

“We lose people but we have people step up, like Andrew (Kuhn), Sean (Smith) and J.K.,” Lazenby said. “All them stepped up and filled huge roles.”
