Area Athlete of the Week: Panthers finish season with impressive victory

STILLWATER, Okla. — In the last 40 seconds of the game, the Glencoe Panthers got to start celebrating their third title and second consecutive and capped off a perfect 29-0 season. The Panthers’ 57-39 victory over Kiowa earned them Area Athlete of the Week.

“Back to back,” senior Sean Smith said. “It feels great.”

The Panthers had to battle in a close game until the end of the third quarter. Ty Lazenby scored the last 13 points of the third quarter and put Glencoe ahead by nine after three.

“Whenever the game is on the line, I have the ability to take over games,” Ty Lazenby said. “My teammates open things up for me that I wouldn’t get by myself. J.K. (Hadlock) hit a three at the beginning of the half and it just opens things up.”

It wasn’t just the starters that contributed to the Panthers’ second consecutive Class A state championship. Junior Claytin Beaver played valuable minutes when post Andrew Kuhn got in foul trouble and helped move the scoreboard.

“To come off the bench and make a big difference, it’s exciting,” Beaver said. “When they need me, I was there. That’s my job coming off the bench. That’s what I did all season.”

The victory gave Glencoe its 33rd straight win. The senior class of Jake Lazenby, Sean Smith and Quentin Ash went 60-1 in their last two seasons.

“We’ve been very blessed,” Jake Lazenby said. “We’ve had no injuries. I’m just so thankful.”

Glencoe will return most of its team including Ty Lazenby, and will eye a third straight championship.

“We were talking about it, this is hard to imagine we may be better next year,” coach John Lazenby said. “As long as you got Ty, you have a chance. I promise you.”
