All-Area boys team shoots strong

STILLWATER, Okla. — The 2013-2014 basketball season is in the books. Some teams were able hoist the gold ball at the end of the year, while others ended their season’s much earlier than they would have wished.

The Glencoe Panthers won back-to-back state titles in Class A and Pawnee made it to the state tournament. For the Stillwater Pioneers, their season was cut short.

Here are some of the basketball players who had great seasons and made the News Press All-Area Boys Basketball Team.

First Team

Ty Lazenby, Jr., Glencoe

Lazenby was the Class A state tournament MVP for the second straight season. He also helped Glencoe get two state titles in as many years. Lazenby averaged 25 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Glencoe.

Jake Lazenby, Sr., Glencoe

Lazenby was named to the Class A State Tournament All-Tournament Team for the second time. The senior was able to get another state title. Lazenby averaged 20 points, three rebounds and two assists a game.

Gideon Gardner, So., Pawnee

Gardner led Pawnee to the state tournament. The 6-foot-1 sophomore averaged 22.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.6 steals per game. Gardner scored 20 or more in 22 of Pawnee’s 28 games and had four games over 30 points.

Ryan Weathers, Sr., Coyle

Weathers led Coyle to the area tournament this year. The senior averaged 13.2 points per game. Weathers had 105 assists, 56 steals and drew 22 charges this season.

Carson Teel, Sr., Stillwater

Teel did whatever the Pioneers needed him to do. The senior averaged 12.3 points over the last three years and the last two seasons he averaged 17 points a game. Teel stepped up his game during his senior season averaging 19.9 points. On average Teel grabbed four boards and had four assists a game. Teel shot 73 percent from the free throw line. Teel also led Stillwater in steals.
