Yale looks to rebound after first loss

YALE, Okla. — As most coaches put it the real season starts when district begins. For several area high schools they will be looking to get off on the right foot as they start district-play.

The Yale Bulldogs (2-1) look to regroup after their first loss against the DrumrightTornadoes at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Yale. Last week, Yale lost 7-6 when Mounds scored a late touchdown. The Tornadoes (1-2) are coming off their first win after defeating Liberty 27-7. Coach Craig Ellis said his team is focused on the little things.

“Drumright had a good game last week and they are our rival and we will probably play their best game against us,” Ellis said. “I thought last week we were the better team. We are focused on being mentally prepared.”

The Cushing Tigers (3-0) look to remain unbeaten as they open district with the Prague Red Devils (0-3) at 7:30 p.m. at O’Dell Field in Cushing. The Tigers are averaging 41 points per game and are going against a Red Devil defense that has given up 40 points per game.

The Morrison Wildcats (2-1) are looking to end the Depew Hornets’ three-game winning streak. Coach Cory Bales said playing consisent will be key.

“Against Alva and Oklahoma Bible Academy we played good first halves but not in the second,” Bales said. “That’s our biggest issue and hopefully we will start playing consistent longer.”

The Pawnee Black Bears (2-1) look to ride the momentum of a two-game winning streak into their district opener at Newkirk at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Tigers are 1-2 after losing to Nowata last week. Pawnee has shut out its last two opponents. Black Bears coach Marlon Houston said he expects this game to be a challenge.

“(Newkirk) is big up front similar to our game against Morrison,” Houston said. “Winning the fight in the trenches is what’s going to help us win this game.”

The Coyle Bluejackets (2-1, 1-1) will have a different look offensively as starting quarterback Ryan Weathers is out with a shoulder injury.

“Jared (Weathers) will be playing quarterback,” coach Shane Weathers said. “We will be OK but will run things a little differently with Jared at the controls. Defensively we are going to be more aggressive than last week.”

The Perkins-Tryon Demons (2-1) look to avenge last season’s loss when they face the undefeated Seminole Chieftains at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Seminole. The Chieftains beat P-T 14-7 last season in Perkins.  The Demons are coming off a 44-21 victory over Verdigris. Coach Lloyd Wertman said his team knows what its up against.

“They are big, huge and fast,” Wertman said. “We got to make sure we do everything we can.”

The Perry Maroons (1-2) look to get their 2A district off to a good start when they visit Tonkawa at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Perry has lost its last two games and been out scored 94-22. The Buccaneers won 17-7 against Fairview last week.
