Pawnee loses to Luther, beats Wellston
DALE — It wasn't exactly a banner day for the Pawnee girls softball team, but one thing remains true: The Lady Bears are still alive.
After dropping the first game of the regional tournament 4-0 to Luther, Pawnee bounced back with a walk-off 2-1 win over Wellston in nine innings.
"(Wellston) is a solid team," Pawnee coach Chad Tsotigh said. "We just couldn't get the bats going. We couldn't string too many hits in a row, but we did what we needed to."
Justice Waters had the walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth, driving in Hannah Burkett to keep the season alive. Haylee Van Deventer picked up the win for Pawnee.
Prior to playing Wellston, Pawnee (23-13) had its struggles against Luther. The Lady Bears fell behind early 1-0 before Luther exploded for three runs in the fifth, while the Pawnee bats went quiet.
"It was just a bunch of things — a walk, a hit batter an error," Tsotigh said of the three-run fifth. "There wasn't anything major. It just wasn't a good inning for us."
Pawnee will play Luther Thursday in the consolation finals, with the winner advancing to play Dale immediately after.
