Perkins-Tryon seniors hope for victory in final home game

STILLWATER, Okla. — Senior years are filled with lasts. Friday night will be the last time the Perkins-Tryon Demons football seniors play in front of their home crowd at McIlvain Field against Okmulgee at 7:30 p.m.

“It’s really sad,” senior quarterback Shelby Reese said. “Playing high school football is a one-time deal. I love the fams and the coaches. It’s an honor to play for Perkins.”

Senior Matt Waitt agreed but is looking forward to Friday’s game.

“I’m ready to play it and go into playoffs,” Waitt said.

Friday may be the Demons last game at home but it might not be the last of the season for the seniors, as they hope for a three-way tie to break in their favor. P-T (4-5, 2-4) played its last district game on Nov. 1 but could still qualify for playoffs if Bristow beats Prague and Chandler loses to Seminole by at least 15 points.

“We know there is nothing we can do about it,” John Sasser said. “We just have to come out and play hard Friday. If we get in, we just have to give it our best shot.”

The last two seasons, injuries have limited Perkins-Tryon’s success. Last season, the  Demons started 5-2 but lost their last four games after injuries started piling up. This year, P-T has had numerous players out with injuries. Reese said it’s been frustrating.

“We could have been a lot better,” Reese said. “I don’t know why we’ve had so many injuries and wish we had less. It’s the way things happen.”

While the last two seasons have been rough, the P-T seniors career started strong winning district in their freshman and sophomore years. For Reese and Waitt their most memorable game was last season’s victory against Bristow.

“It was a good game,” Reese said. “Both fan bases were cheering. We scored, then they would score. It was a fun game.”

“In the last three seconds, I caught the game-winning touchdown,” Waitt said. “It was so cool. It was like a movie ending.”

Waitt said being a Demon means a lot to him and is a privilege.

“You want to go in and work hard every day,” Waitt said. “You want to be there for your team. You want to be be strong, be tough and try your best.

Sasser said he wants to walk off the field as a winner one last time on Friday.

“It’s very important to me,” Sasser said. “You want to win your last game at home and go out on top.”
