Updated: Pawnee splits second day of Cushing Tournament

CUSHING, Okla. —

The Pawnee Lady Black Bears’ mistakes led to a 7-0 loss to Cushing Lady Tigers but they recovered for a 10-1 victory over the Pawhuska Lady Huskies.

The first game started well for Pawnee has it retired the first three Cushing batters. Two hits along with two walks and two errors gave the Lady Tigers two runs in the second. A pair of walks in the third led to a five-run inning and a 7-0 lead.

“They were able to hit the ball into some tough places,” coach Chad Tsotigh said. “Our girls in the outfield were close to making plays but the ball fell in front of them. It didn’t help that we weren’t able to get the bats going.”

The second game went much better for the Lady Black Bears as several people made contributions at the plate.  Hannah Burkett hit a double and a run-scoring triple and scored. Chrissie Collins hit a double and single. Haley Evans went 2 for 2. Keely Roberts went 2 for 3 with a double. Tori Stevens hit a triple and single. Haley Van Deventer who took the loss in game one, hit two singles in game two.

Tsotigh said his team again did a good job of getting going in the second game but needs his players to start faster.

“We got to start showing up for the first one,” Tsotigh said. “The competition we are playing — Drumright and Cushing — they aren’t slouches. It doesn’t help our goal of winning the game when we are giving them free bases. We are continuing to work on some of that. Hopefully the next time we play them we will make them earn it more.”

The Lady Black Bears (2-2) conclude the tournament today with Depew at 10 a.m., Perkins-Tryon at 11:30 a.m. and Morris at 2 p.m.
