Pawnee softball team splits Cushing Tournament

CUSHING, Okla. —

During the first two days of the Cushing Softball Tournament, the Pawnee Lady Black Bears struggled in the first game and played better in the second. Saturday went exactly the opposite as Pawnee beat Depew 6-5 and lost to Perkins-Tryon 2-0.

The Lady Black Bears (3-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Depew. Coach Chad Tsotigh said his team got after the starting pitcher.

“Depew was kind of struggling pitching during the tournament,” Tsotigh said. “We made good contact.”

Pawnee added two more runs in the fifth to expand its lead. But the Lady Hornets rallied and tied the game to force the international tiebreaker, in which each team starts the inning with a runner on second. The Lady Black Bears set Depew down in order. In the bottom half Tori Stevens stole third. Hannah Burkett hit a line-drive, walk-off single with one out to give Pawnee the win. Earlier in the game, Burkett tripled and she picked up her third win of the season.

In the second game, walks to Perkins-Tryon’s first two batters led to Pawnee’s undoing. Jeri Adkism, who led off came home on a bunt, in which the Lady Black Bears didn’t record an out. A sacrifice fly brought home another run. Freshman Chrissie Collins took the loss.

The Lady Black Bears visit Pawhuska at 5 p.m. Monday.
