Stillwater High softball falls to Owasso

OWASSO, Okla. — A night after the Stillwater High School softball team went toe-to-toe with one of the state’s offensive powerhouses, the Lady Pioneer bats went silent in a 10-0 loss to Owasso Tuesday.

“We’ve had better games,” Stillwater coach Amber Davis said. “We held our own against Broken Arrow and (Tuesday) we just didn’t hit the ball as well as we should have, but we’ll be alright.”

Stillwater (0-2, 0-2 in district) lost to Broken Arrow 7-3 on Monday, but the young Lady Pioneer squad struggled at the plate and in the field against an Owasso team that could compete against Broken Arrow for the district title.

“We played pretty well (Monday),” Davis said. “We had great defensive play, but things just didn’t go our way. (Tuesday) we were just a little bit not as focused as we should have been, but we’ll be OK.”

Davis said part of the reason for Stillwater’s early season struggles is because the Lady Pioneers are so young, with several underclassmen playing in key positions.

Even though both were district games — games that are crucial to Stillwater’s postseason hopes — Davis feels confident knowing that these early season struggles should pay off later in the season.

“We’re off to a little bit of a slow start, but this year we’re really young,” Davis said. “Right now, we’re trying to work out a lot of the kinks. We’re trying to figure out who is going to be where in the lineup and defensively.”

After suffering two losses so far this week, the road doesn’t get any easier for Stillwater. The Lady Pioneers will play its third straight district road game when it takes on Sapulpa at 5 p.m. Thursday.

“I think they’re going to be ready,” Davis said. “They know that they made some lackadaisical and mental errors. Everything that we did wrong has been addressed, so they’ll be ready to fight on Thursday.”
