Freshman off to hot start in circle for Glencoe softball

STILLWATER, Okla. — Softball pitchers more times than not usually determine the outcome of a game — which could be a lot of responsibility for one person to bare. The Glencoe Lady Panthers have given the ball to freshman Alicia Place, who has led the Lady Panthers to a 9-3 record.

“She is very focused and concentrates on what she is doing,” coach Tabitha Wright said. “She strives to be better all the time. She has strong leadership skills.”

Last week, Place won games against Olive and Coyle allowing three runs combined in those contests. Wright said Place is also making an impact at the plate, leading Glencoe in batting average. The freshman pitcher said she feels good about what she’s accomplished so far.

“I’m doing great and having fun,” Place said.

The freshman didn’t grow up in the Lady Panthers’ system as she moved from Jennings. Place said it was pretty easy to get adjusted to her new teammates.

“The first day of school, I got to see them,” Place said. “It was nice. I like playing softball. I like Glencoe.”

Place has pitched for five years and has worked with Ronnie Smith. The freshman said she likes to keep opposing hitters off balance.

“I like to mix in different pitches, different speeds and different movement,” she said.

Place succeeds Summer Jefferies as the Lady Panthers’ starting pitcher. Last season Jefferies helped lead Glencoe to its first regional berth in over a decade. Wright said Jefferies did good last year but likes what she is seeing out of Place.

“(Place) is a lot more consistent,” Wright said. “She throws strikes and gives up less walks.”

Though she’s just a freshman, Place has big goals for her first season.

“I want to do the best I can and help Glencoe,” Place said. “Hopefully we can make it to state.”
