Everything clicks for Coyle in win over Agra

COYLE, Okla. — The Coyle Bluejackets had an up-and-down start to their 2012 season. They knocked off then-No.1 Woodland but lost early games to Covington-Douglas and Rejoice Christian. Now, things are clicking for Coyle as it’s riding a three-game winning streak and in contention for a district title.

Coach Shane Weathers said his team has spent most of its practices working on execution.

“We always scout our opponent,” Weathers said. “The last three weeks of practice we’ve been working a lot on ourselves. We’ve been working on our execution on defensive sets and working on our offense.”

In their last three games, the Bluejackets are averaging 49 points per game and have only allowed 28 total points. In the first three games, Coyle only averaged  21 points. Defensively, the Bluejackets allowed 34 and 52 points in losses to Covington-Douglas and Rejoice Christian. Early in the season, Coyle struggled with penalties and lining up correctly on offense. Weathers said the blocking scheme has been key to the offenses’ success.

“Our blocking is a lot better,” Weathers said. “We are staying with our blocks longer and creating more running room. We are running the ball well.”

Friday against Agra, Coyle racked up 454 total yards with 413 coming on the ground. Senior running back Fidel Simpson led the Bluejackets with 244 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns, including one from 93 yards. Junior quarterback Ryan Weathers rushed for 112 yards scoring two touchdowns and threw for a touchdown.

Coyle’s defense was tough, limiting Agra to five yards rushing and 81 yards passing. The Bluejackets have only giving up six points in their last two games.

“We allowed Agra less than 100 yards,” Weathers said. “The defense played well and was agressive.”

The Bluejackets (4-2, 4-1) enter the last three games of their season in contention for a district title. Coyle is tied with South Coffeyville and Woodland in district record. Woodland’s overall record is a half game better and South Coffeyville is a game ahead of Coyle. The Bluejackets play South Coffeyville for the final game of the season. Rejoice Christian leads the district with a 5-0 record.

“We lost to Rejoice Christian early and that will be hard to overcome,” Weathers said. “We’ve gotten key wins over Woodland, Copan and Agra. If we fix the things we need to we will be fine.”

Coyle travels to Watts Friday.
