STILLWATER, Okla. —
The Edmond Santa Fe girls basketball team proved why they are ranked No. 1 in the state and won a state championship last season.
Stillwater High was the first team to find that out as the Lady Pioneers fell 83-25 in the season opener Tuesday.
“They are just a very good team, very talented,” SHS coach Carl Treat said.
A large reason for the lopsided result was Santa Fe’s defense. Not only did they force Stillwater to take bad shots, the Lady Wolves also forced the Lady Pioneers to turn the ball over.
Through the first three quarters — with Santa Fe’s regulars playing — Stillwater had nearly twice as many turnovers (25) as points (13).
Stillwater finally got some scoring going in the fourth quarter with players from the end of Santa Fe’s bench getting some varsity minutes.
Most of that action came from Stillwater’s returning leading scorer LaNesha Middleton. After being held to 4 points in the first half, the senior guard scored 13 points in the second half to finish with 17 of SHS’ 25 points.
Stillwater will play Tulsa NOAH in Ponca City at 4 p.m. Thursday — followed by the SHS boys game — and will play Harder Charter Prep in Ponca at the same time Friday.
