BIXBY, Okla. —
The Stillwater High boys’ basketball team won the Bixby Tournament on Saturday night with a 56-50 victory over Springdale, Ark.
Coach Michael Davis like the way the Pioneers played against Springdale, but Friday’s semifinal matchup between Stillwater High and Bixby may have been the Pioneers’ best performance of the year.
Stillwater needed overtime to defeat the host team 60-56 to reach the tourney finals.
“I was pretty impressed with the way we played,” Stillwater coach Michael Davis said. “They definitely grew up in this game. We have no returning starters this year, and Rico Thompson fouled out just before overtime, but this game let them know they can still play with anybody — no matter who is on the floor.”
The Pioneers were led by Tyler Holcomb with 15 points and Tanner Killam’s 10. Caleb Watkins scored 6 points but had three assists.
“Caleb Watkins played his butt off tonight,” Davis said. “Tanner (Killam) also played great. But really you have to give credit to the entire team. They all played as one cohesive unit.”
Saturday night, Holcomb scored 22 to led the Stillwater scoring. Dylan Murrell added 10 for Stillwater.
Stillwater started sluggishly against Springdale, but narrowed the Arkansas team’s lead to 2 points at halftime.
“We had clawed our way back by halftime, and were able to pull the game out,” he said.
The Pioneers will play host to Enid at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Pioneer Fieldhouse.
