Morrison looks toward future after playoff loss

WYNNEWOOD, Okla. — The Morrison Wildcats may not be preparing for another football game last week after losing 24-6 to the top-ranked Wynnewood Savages Friday. Coach Cory Bales and players feel good about how they played.

“I would love to still be playing but I couldn’t be more proud of (the team),” Bales said.

“We played pretty well,” VanDorn said. “Everyone was in their spots. ... They are a good team.”

The Wildcats finished the 2012 season 9-3. Friday night, Morrison’s defense held a Savage team that averaged 55 points per game to only a touchdown and three first downs. Wynnewood scored on the second play of its first possession punted twice and lost a fumble on its remaining first half possessions.

“Our line just gave everything it had,” senior John Sanders said. “Our line did great, we played our spots and stayed in our gaps. We played great in the first half.”

Offensively, Morrison moved into Wynnewood territory multiple times but weren’t able to gain the key yards when it needed it. The Wildcats were 6 of 18 on third down conversions. The Savages were able to force Morrison into long yardage situations as senior Kyle Collins had to throw 20 passes. The Wildcats gained 119 yards on the ground with VanDorn led the team in rushing with 51 yards. Quinata led the team in receiving with two receptions for 52 yards.

“We just missed some opportunities to score on fourth down early in the game,” Bales said. “We had field position the entire first half and just weren’t able to knock that other touchdown in.”

Friday’s loss ended the careers of receiver/linebacker Jared Mackey, receiver/linebacker Kyle Ross, lineman Daniel Garrard, lineman Brad Pittman, lineman Brayden Garringer, Tevin Conklin, Sanders and Collins. VanDorn said the seniors played hard.

“They played pretty well,” VanDorn said. “We have some that are going to be hard to replace. The ones who will replace them will do well next year. I got to give (the seniors) credit. They did everything they could.”

The Wildcats have a lot returning including freshman running back Jordan Quinata and VanDorn. Junior Justin Bearry, Andrew Polasek, Brent Coleman and Jacob Barton and sophomore Travis Dunn should have bigger roles in 2013. Bales said he is looking forward to next year.

“We will back,” Bales said.
