Stillwater High wrestling holds off Bartlesville at home

STILLWATER, Okla. — Once again, the Stillwater Pioneers had a dual come down to the final two weighs, holding a 33-29 lead. Just like last Tuesday’s dual against Claremore, Stillwater came out on top as Cyntrell Carden won the 220-pound weight class by decision to lead the Pioneers to a 42-29 victory over Bartlesville.

“We need someone to step up at the upper end and put a stop to some of these comebacks people are putting on us,” coach Doug Chesbro said. “We were able to do that against Claremore with Cody Knight. Tonight we didn’t have that person who stepped up in those upper weights and said ‘That’s enough.’ ... The score gets close at the end and of course Cyntrell gets a win and we get a forfeit in the heavyweight.”

Stillwater jumped out to a 33-5 lead with four victories by fall, one by forfeit and one by decision. The key match in the lower weights was in the 126-pound weight class as junior Benny Teegarden held off Jonah Finley 12-7, taking control in the second period to avenge a loss at last season’s regional tournament.

“I wrestled well on my feet,” Teegarden said. “(Finley) is good with his hips, so I rode on top and that’s pretty difficult. I was good on my feet and was happy with how I wrestled.”

The Pioneers (5-2) had some new faces in the lineup including Beau Bigheart in the 145-pound weight class. Bigheart, who hadn’t wrestled since his sophomore season easily took care of Bartlesville’s Garrett Kitchel, winning by fall 42 seconds into the match.

“I just focused and got the pre-game jitters out,” Bigheart said. “Once the whistle blew I was ready to lock up and get going.”

Chesbro said he’s been playing with his lineup and said he’s close to finding a fit.

“We’ve had seven different duals and I think we’ve had seven different lineups,” Chesbro said. “We are trying to narrow it down and find what our best competitive lineup is to put guys out there. I think we are close tonight. I was happy with our effort at 145 pounds with Beau Bigheart there.”

Teegarden said the new wrestlers are stepping up.

“They haven’t wrestled very long,” Teegarden said. “We got some good guys in the room to help them learn technique and stuff. They wrestled pretty good for the first time.”

After Bigheart’s match, momentum turned in favor of the Bruins. Logan Anderson lost the 152 weight class bout by decision. Curtis Colthrop, Greg Worthy and Keith Pickens each lost by fall. Cody Knight lost the 195-pound weight class match by decision which cut the Pioneers’ lead to 33-29.

Chesbro said his middle weights just need more experience.

“We start a lot of sophomores and juniors and freshmen,” Chesbro said. “It’s not that we have seniors who aren’t showing leadership. It’s hard for some of these kids to find that person to be the leader and follow them. We got some really good juniors, sophomores and freshmen. It’s hard for the older kids to follow them.”

The Pioneers visit Sapulpa for their second district dual and an opportunity to qualify for the dual state tournament in February. Friday and Saturday, Stillwater competes in the Perry Tournament.
