Stillwater wrestling takes second at Jenks tournament

JENKS, Okla. — The Stillwater High School wrestling team opened the second half of the season with a bang over the weekend, finishing second as a team behind Muskogee in the Larry Wilkey Invitational.

“The boys wrestled well coming off of the two week layoff and showed that they are ready to push forward into the remainder of the season,” Stillwater coach Doug Chesbro said. “Finishing in the top two at this weekend’s tournament should show the rest of the state that we are a team not to be taken lightly.”

Four Stillwater High  wrestlers reached the finals after the first day of the tournament on Friday and all four came away with titles.

Kennedy Monday defeated No. 1 seed Cody Lambert of Casica Hall to claim the Pioneers’ first title at 106 pound. Kaid Brock followed that up with a pin of Casica Hall’s Scout Skidgel — who was previously undefeated — in the 113-pound match.

Joe Smith also remained perfect this season, sweeping through the 132-pound weight class en route to the title, while Benny Teegarden beat Sapulpa’s Cory Jones for the second time this season to claim the 126-pound title.

Along with winning the 113-pound title Brock was also named the tournament’s Oustanding Wrestler.

Senior Cory Revier also earned a medal, finishing fifth overall in the 160-pound weight class.

Mason Mefford, Chase Lane, Beau Bigheart and Cyntrell Carden also picked up wins on Saturday, while C.J. Citizen and Cody Knight made it through Friday’s first round but were unable to advance to the medal rounds.

Stillwater will return to the mat Tuesday when they travel to Enid. The Pioneers will also face Ponca City on Thursday before heading to the Sapupla for a tournament over the weekend.
