Frontier girls steamroll Morrison to reach championship game

Rematch set with Pawnee in title contest at 7 p.m.

MORRISON, Okla. — Frontier coach Clay Stephens said throughout the season that the key to his team’s success is how well they shoot from the outside. Friday night against Morrison, the Lady Mustangs were very successful from the outside, hitting 11 3-pointers in a 75-45 victory in the semifinals of the Mike Kerr Classic.

“When we make our 3-point shots we’re pretty good,” Stephens said.

Frontier knocked Morrison out of the game early, taking a 22-4 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Mustangs had a 12-0 run that Morrison didn’t break up until the second quarter. The Lady Wildcats ran a zone to limit the Lady Mustangs’ top scorer, Marissa Goodman in the post. Bethany Childs made Morrison pay hitting three 3-pointers in the first quarter and five in the first half. Childs finished with 17 points. The Lady Mustangs were also able to take advantage of Lady Wildcat miscues, scoring several easy transition baskets.

“(Morrison) runs that zone and (Childs) is open,” Stephens said. “She’s going to shoot and she was making it today.”

The second quarter went exactly like the first as the Lady Wildcats only scored one point most of the quarter.  Morrison made some shots at the end of the quarter but entered halftime with a 49-16 deficit. Lady Wildcat coach Luke Kruse said he wished his team would have gave better effort.

“We just have the tendency of losing focus when we get down,” Kruse said.

Despite Morrison’s effort to slow down Goodman, the junior post still scored 26 points in three quarters, which equaled the Lady Wildcat team. Stephens said Goodman just has a knack for finding the ball.

“Some people you throw the ball and they kind of hide,” Stephens said. “She has a knack for getting it and gets offensive rebounds. She averages 22 (points) and 9 (rebounds) for us.”

With Frontier’s starters on the bench in the fourth, Morrison was able to pad its score, outscoring the Lady Mustangs 19-5. Rissa Inselman led the Lady Wildcats with 14 points. Shana Walls was second on the team with 9.

Morrison (5-6) will play Afton for third place at 4 p.m. today.

“It’s been a while since we’ve been in the winner’s bracket,” Kruse said. “So they’re still excited to go for third. We are playing Afton, so it should be a winnable game.”

The Lady Mustangs (11-4) will face the Pawnee Lady Black Bears in the championship at 7 p.m. Pawnee beat Frontier 46-42 Monday.

“We played them Monday and it didn’t go very well,” Stephens said. “We are looking forward to it.”
