Stillwater High girls win consolation bracket

ADA, Okla. — Stillwater High School senior Austyn Iven can probably count the number of times she’s been held scoreless for a half on one hand.

But after a slow start, Iven scored 11 points — none bigger than two free throws with 4.4 seconds left — as the Lady Pioneers beat Ada 44-42 in the consolation finals of the East Central Oklahoma Classic in Ada.

“She scored all 11 of her points in the second half and none of those were 3-pointers,” Stillwater coach Carl Treat said. “To her credit, she kept her head in it and played really well.”

It was a struggle from the start for the Lady Pioneers (8-4), as Ada jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the first quarter thanks to some hot 3-point shooting.

“They hit a couple 3s and it just felt like we were playing catch-up the entire game,” Treat said. “We finally took the lead in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t until Austyn knocked down those two free throws that we finally put them away.”

Trailing 12-9 after one quarter, Stillwater adjusted its defense a little to defend against Ada’s ability to fill up the basket from beyond the arc.

Ada responded by using its larger post players to take a 21-19 lead into halftime.

“It was tough,” Treat said. “Ada has a really good post player and we had to change our defensive schemes a couple of times because of it. I was very pleased by the way we executed that defense. Our girls responded well and I was pleased with the way they guarded after that first quarter.”

Stillwater finally took the lead in the fourth quarter — expanding it to four at one point — before the Lady Cougars tied the game with 18 seconds left.

With time winding down, Iven drove the lane and found a hole before being fouled while going up. Iven then coolly knocked down both her free throws to give Stillwater the win.

“This was a good win for us,” Treat said. “The girls are really playing well. Ada was ranked No. 15 in Class 4A, so this was the type of tournament we needed to build some confidence. There were a lot of good teams in this tournament so to come away with a win in the consolation finals — that’s something special.”

Next, Stillwater will face Enid Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Pioneer Fieldhouse.
