Stillwater boys top Ponca City for ECOC title

ADA, Okla. — It took a second half comeback, but the Stillwater High School boys basketball team accomplished what it set out to do — bring back a trophy from Ada.

Rico Thompson scored 18 points, while Braydn Murrell added 12 off the bench as the Pioneers beat Ponca City 50-47 Saturday night in Enid.

“We were down 13 at halftime and without Jared Dickey, who was at home sick,” Stillwater coach Michael Davis said. “We started freshman Jordan Brown in his place and the guys came up big.”

After taking a 9-8 lead after the first quarter, Ponca City outscored the Pioneers 18-4 in the second quarter to take a 26-13 lead at the break.

Stillwater (9-3) hung with the Wildcats through the third quarter before exploding for 24 points in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback.

“This was a very good win for us,” Davis said. “We had guys like Bradyn who were a big part of the success. Even though we were down one, it just shows the character of these guys. They knew they needed to step up and they did.

“Our defense was a whole lot better in the second half. We started knocking some shots down and the guys started to taste that success.”

Along with Thompson and Murrell, Carson Teel added 12 points after his 29-point performance in the 77-62 win over Ada Friday. Caleb Watkins and Brett Budke also added 4 points each.

“I’m very excited for the team,” Davis said. “This was a big win for us and we’re hoping to continue to build off of it. But we couldn’t have done it without our fans. They made the trip and battled the conditions to come cheer us on and they really helped us when we needed them.”

Thompson was named the tournament’s MVP, while Teel and Budke earned spots on the all-tournament team.

The Pioneers will return home to face Enid Tuesday.
